The Judicial Branch - June 01, 2004

Personally, I am sick of my rhetoric and have resolved that I will actually do something about my fear regarding this country's future if Bush remains in office.

The next president will have the responsibility of appointing a huge number of federal judges, whose tenure lasts for life. It has been predicted that 2 to 3 Supreme Court justices will retire in the next few years. How these new judges interpret the laws will have a profound effect on society, particularly on our civil liberties, for the next 20 to 30 years. To date, Bush has selected some of the most right-wing, conservative legal thinkers in our country as judicial candidates. It is a dubious proposition that he will change this trend, if he is given another four years. The only way to prevent perhaps irreperable harm from our judicial branch is to get Bush out.

In tandem with my concern as to who might interpret the law, I am incresasingly concerned with the laws and regulations that the Bush administration endorses and has passed. For instance, the growing trend by the FCC to censor all arenas of communication (e.g. Howard Stern or Janet Jackson) is alarming. And then there is the Patriot Act. Oh yeah, and his environmental record.

I shudder to think of what this country will look like if it stays on its current trajectory. I cannot bare to think that I could have done something, but didn't. There is too much at stake.
