Why am I taking a trip? In the past I was content to learn the issues, study the candidates, and vote for the better candidate. With our current administration, that is not enough. We need to bring more people into the process and Drivingvotes.org is a great way to do that.

About me: Happily married father of two great kids, Grace and Jack. I'm a systems analyst for the State of California. Trying to make our country and world a better place. I'm not one to often quote the US Catholic Bishop's Conference, but I agree with this one. "We are our brother's and sister's keepers, wherever they live. We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. Learning to practice the virtue of solidarity means learning that "loving our neighbor" has global dimensions in an interdependent world..

The case for war?? - August 10, 2004

Listening to some of President Bush’s supporters who back this horrible Iraq war, I can only shake my head and be reminded of a quote of President Reagan’s during one of his Presidential debates, “There you go again.” Bush’s supporters lament the lack of intelligent argument against the war in Iraq and somehow imply that sound rational reasoning backs the war. Wow! Where oh where to begin?
Since these Bush supporters seem to think that President Bush has made a sound, credible case for war with Iraq, let’s look at some of the President’s statements leading up to the war. From Bush’s 1/28/03 State of the Union Address: “Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard, and Vx nerve agent.” Reality: Not true, you would think we would have gotten a little better intelligence from our man Chalabi for the millions we paid him. “Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical or biological weapons across broad areas.” Reality: Not true, no such vehicles have been found or any credible evidence that they ever existed. “Satellite photographs reveal that Iraq is rebuilding facilities at [past nuclear] sites.” Reality: Two months of inspections at sites identified by the U.S. found zero evidence of a rebuilding nuclear program. “Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.” Reality: Not true, in fact the CIA and the White House knew months earlier that this intelligence was based on forged documents and not credible but it goes in the State of the Union speech anyway.
We impeached a President for lying about an affair with an intern, yet President Bush can lie to and mislead the American people in his case for war and that is all right? So much for high crimes and misdemeanors being an impeachable offense.
Over 900 dead American soldiers, thousands more injured, thousands of innocent civilian deaths (pardon me, I meant collateral damage), a $200 billion price tag and rising , all for what? Eliminating yet to be found Weapons of Mass Destruction? Removing an imminent threat to the United States? A peaceful and secure Iraq? A diminished al-Qaida? So much for results.
War with Iraq. It may make perfect sense to others it doesn’t for myself and others, including the Pope for my conservative Catholic friends…
