I attended the DNC Eastern Caucus yesterday. I, along with 60+ people from Driving Votes (www.drivingvotes.org) turned out to watch and record the proceedings. All the candidates spoke of the importance of a 50 state strategy and turning red states blue. Almost all the candidates gave lip service to the role of grassroots organizing in winning elections but only Dean, Rosenberg and Fowler seemed to have a real plan and concrete experience working with that base.

After some doubt, Driving Votes visitors and other un-credentialed folks were admitted to the Ballroom, thanks in large part to Elena’s tremendous organizing work.

The hall leading up to the ballroom was filled with chair and vice-chair candidate tables. I was surprised by just how much campaigning was taking place. Each candidate was given five minutes for opening statements. A question and answer period followed, and each candidate closed with a one-minute summary. Here are some notes on the candidate’s speeches.

Frost opened up the forum, focusing on security, safety and the importance of a 50-state strategy, including revenue sharing. He emphasized the importance of not forgetting the basics of campaigning. He touted his personal experience with security, his wife being highly ranked member of the armed services.

Wellington Webb spoke next. He is the only candidate of color running. He said he wanted to put DNC members to work. He suggested employing local Democrats to win local elections rather than shipping in outsiders shortly before each election. Message, the mechanics of the message and the communicator of the message were integral. Stabilizing the base, which includes better representation of minorities within the party, should be one focus of the DNC. He garnered a loud response from members of the crowd when he spoke about including more minorities in the party. He promised to fight on issues that matter. He was quite a persuasive speaker. While some blogs have criticized Webb’s focus on identity politics, it is still clearly an issue that the Democratic Party has yet to address adequately.

Dean spoke next. Dean proposed adding an ED, Finance director and two grassroots organizers on the DNC payroll year round. This would keep the Democratic Party in touch with issues on the ground and connect democrats to the larger Party. Dean also pointed out that reforming the DNC and taking back democratic control is not just about winning traditional races but also includes taking back the County Clerk, the Secretary of State and other seats integral to determining the election process. He ended by speaking about the importance of conviction and not becoming the "Republican-light" party. Dean also mentioned that he would try to limit infighting on issues that were of little import.

Simon Rosenberg is sick and tired of being sick and tired. He discussed the importance of a clear and consistent message across the party and the need to build up a new, efficient way to spread that message through the media, the Party, and individuals. He mentioned weekly meetings as a way to do this. He outlined mechanisms to winning elections, including utilizing new technology, specifically the blogosphere.

Donnie Fowler, Jr. followed with a cry to rid the Party of consultants who continually lose elections. Local people need to be involved in local elections. He discussed the importance being realistic about our true base versus our imagined base, i.e. Latinos. The Party needs to speak to common values, access, opportunity, and fairness. During the question and answer period he mentioned the importance of looking to grassroots organizations for their input. In his closing statements he mentioned he still had dirt under his nails from being entrenched in the grassroots.

Tim Roemer began his remarks by noting he was a fighter as exemplified by his presence on the 9/11 Commission. It is unclear to me how this was relevant to his qualifications for DNC chair. I think he was trying to establish a connection with New Yorkers. But, there wasn’t much of a response from the room as proclaimed his fighting spirit illustrated by his promise to restore America to a 9/11 widow who lost everything but her husband’s detached ring finger. He also took time to discuss his stance on choice. He said that he was for choice, but had worked to reduce the number of abortions and increase family planning under the Clinton administration. He seemed to be talking around the issue. The DNC chair needs to be clear about the DNC’s position on choice—which should be that the question is ONLY about a woman’s right to choose, not the government’s.

Leland closed out the speakers. He turned up the volume by the end of his speech, focusing on the need for a campaign 365 days a year. He pointed out that the Democratic Party made America the America we love. He spoke very eloquently of a party he loved, and of his experience running campaigns, a party etc. He believes the DNC chair is more of a managerial position than anything else. While he certainly has experience, the Ohio democratic climate leaves much to be desired.

The need for a long-term strategy came across in all the candidate’s speeches. I think that only Dean and Rosenberg have the vision and ability to create and implement a strategy that will move the Party forward.

2. GALLUP POLLS...STINK. OR AT LEAST SMELL.

'Miami Voters Received Letters from a Letterwriting Party
and Called Back!

'Peter Acocella encountered Democracy for NYC at two letter writing parties at Phyllis Weiner's apartment with Tracey Denton. Along with other concerned New Yorkers, Peter wrote letters to Florida citizens that Seniors for America had identified as "independents that are likely to vote." Many letter writers included their phone numbers in the letters. A man from Miami actually called Peter! He said he wasn't sure who he was voting for, and Peter's letter helped to sway him.

'Peter and the letter-recipient spoke for about 20 minutes. The man is
a veteran and told Peter that he was particularly concerned by Republican attacks on Kerry's war record. Peter asked him how the race was looking in Florida and the man said it looks 50-50. This morning, Peter got another phone call - this time from a man who had been a Republican but recently converted to our side. He thanked Peter for his letter and said he had already voted for John Kerry. A good omen, perhaps?

'Peter also recently got a phone call from Gallup. He was very excited to take part in this poll, until it turned out to be a push poll, with conservative-leaning questions that "push" the respondents to give very Republican answers. Peter pointed this out to the pollster, who admitted "I'm on your side", and said that he was just a college student that needed a job. Both the pollster and Peter agreed that Peter probably shouldn't take part in the poll. This perhaps partially explains why Gallup's poll numbers favor Bush, in addition to the incorrect sampling, the mobile number issue, and the fact that Gallup is run by a right-wing conservative. '

Where we were in West Philly on Saturday is something like a ghost town. It was hard to tell which buildings were abandoned and which were just really run-down, sad places to live. But Dave MacD and I, plus an intrepid new Driving Votes tripper named EJ, spent the day talking to voters in this important part of town. We had lists of registered voters, including info on how many times everyone voted in past elections. We walked this four block by four block area get noon to seven, asking people if they’d sign a “Count on Me” to promise to vote and if they’d hang an ACORN sign in their window. The signs, saying “Another ACORN family that votes” seemed to be an easy commitment, and we encouraged everyone to hang them up on the spot, to create a community of voters. We saw many new signs when we left that evening. We also got positive responses about voting from most West Philadelphians. We heard a lot of “Bush isn’t going to steal the election again” and “This war is fucked up.” Some volunteered to help get out the vote with us in the days to come, some were interested in paid positions as canvassers. When people said politicians didn’t care about their neighborhood, we reminded them that registering to vote and voting are the best ways to make politicians pay attention to you, and that way too often areas like this get ignored, in favor of higher turn-out suburbs. Though we definitely faced some initial skepticism, we made many friends and got many promises to vote on November 2nd.
Here’s a photo of us at the ACORN office before hitting the streets. Pennsylvania is looking good for Kerry right now, and we think it’ll be even stronger when all these “infrequent” voters show up at the polls and make their strong voices heard. It’s not easy to go into a foreign neighborhood and ask people to promise to vote, but Philly is a friendly town full of people waiting to be paid attention to. Dave, EJ and I worked hard and made dozens and dozens of contacts with Kerry supporters who will be out in full force next week. Yeah Driving Votes! See you all in Philly.

Last weekend the NY chapter went down to PA and met up with the Boston and the Maryland Chapters of Driving Votes. Kirby, the PA State Captain, led trainings all day Saturday as volunteers filtered in and then swarmed out onto the streets of Philly and neighboring Norristown. Sunday we all met up at a coffee shop in Philly, then hit the streets for the final day of voter registration. Over the weekend we registered over 830 voters! Great job everyone!

Check out the ride board for upcoming trips. Folks are going down every weekend to do get out the vote activities. The NY chapter is organizing activities 10/16 and 10/30-11/2. Take a weekend off and change the outcome of this election.

Photos and personal stories from that day coming soon. We registered nearly 200 people in under four hours. There is one last weekend left. Can we make sure that there is no eligible Democratic voter left unregistered in the state of PA?

Tonight we ran the second training along with Kerry Village, New Democratic Majority and Women for Kerry. Thanks to the Tank for lending us their space. Elena and I did the ever-popular basics of voter registration training. Julie led the building confidence in Kerry workshop and Michael provided essential details about canvassing. 75 people came! Overall, people were excited and energized to help convince people to get out there and vote, and hopefully vote for Kerry. It is inspiring to have so many people turn out to learn how to encourage others to vote.

We will be doing another training Tuesday October 12th, location TBA. There are many upcoming events to participate in. This weekend is the last weekend for voter registration in PA. If you are interested in joining Driving Votes this weekend email Kansas@drivingvotes.org. After this weekend we will be focusing on phone banking and get out the vote efforts. Check out the ride board for a listing of trips from NYC. Also check out the Kerry Village sight or NYC Swingers for upcoming trips from NY.

It’s not too late. This election isn’t over. Get involved, take a trip, make a phone call to a friend, every little effort helps.

Huge shout out to Elena for helping to organize a very successful voter registration training along with Julie from Women for Kerry and Adam from Kerry Village. Three groups working to get Bush out of office and get John Kerry and John Edwards elected came together to teach others how they can work toward the same goal. The training consisted of a brief introduction by Adam about the groups, followed by a phenomenal lesson on how to talk to people about John Kerry. Julie suggested using the value-statement-to-policy-statement technique as a way to bring the discussion out of political jargon and into terms more people can identify with. An example of this would be to say something like,

“The premiums on health insurance are really a strain in my life. It is stressful to have to pay so much every month. Some of my friends even go without health insurance because it just costs too much.”

This could be followed by a policy statement about John Kerry like,

“John Kerry has a plan to cut premiums for Americans and decrease prescription drug costs.”

We could all use a little boost on talking about why we want John Kerry elected. I think we can also always revert to the fact that when John Kerry is president, less people will be dying for no reason. We’ve had a president whose lied to us, who has brought people into war for no reason, who has ruined the economy. Not only is John Kerry a bright light next Bush, he actually has some solid strategies.

The next part of the training was Elena and myself talking about Driving Votes and how all 60 of the people in the room could easily take a trip to a swing state and register voters. We did some role playing and a little acting. The participants asked some great questions. All in all, I think it went really well. (Elena, you should insert a quote from one of the evaluations).

We got a number of people excited about taking trips, doing phone banking, or just tabling in NYC. I think people walked out energized and excited about the fact that we do have real power in this upcoming election. Things can and will change in our favor as we keep working toward enfranchising and energizing more voters. Thanks Adam for preparing an incredibly informative Action Calendar of upcoming things to do in NY!

If you missed this training and are interested in another, never fear, there will be another one next week—Monday September 27, 2004, 7pm, location TBA.

We have been working more and more with other grassroots groups in NYC as the big day draws nearer, trying to find ways to get as many people as possible effectively involved in swing state action. I have officially become obsessed with the state of Pennsylvania. My father grew up in Pittsburgh and I recently heard myself asking him questions like, "What is it really like to be a Pennsylvanian?" or "Tell me about the Allegheny. Really." He looks at me a little funny. I want to be inside their heads, is that wrong? Each time DV NY takes a trip there, it is starting to feel more and more like the promised land. And everyone glistens with electoral power.

Info for an upcoming training in coordination with two local groups is below:

Women for Kerry NY (womenforkerryny@gmail.com), Kerry Village (www.kerryvillage.org) and Driving Votes NY will be conducting a superspecial training Monday, September 20th. Get confident before you hit the streets and take back our country.

Whether you've done voter outreach and registration before or not, this is meant to be an opportunity to improve your confidence and skill.

ALL POLITICS IS PERSONAL The first 45 minutes will be led by Women for Kerry NY, who will teach you techniques for improving the quality of your interactions with swing voters. The training will teach you to talk about Kerry's policies versus Bush's using personal value statements. Connect with swing voters on a personal level.

WHAT'S YOUR NAME? During the second 45 minutes, Driving Votes NY will teach you some techniques to register voters more efficiently and effectively (how to approach people, how to counter common excuses, common mistakes).

There will be opportunity to sign up for upcoming actions with Women for Kerry NY, Kerry Village and Driving Votes after the trainings.

WHEN: Monday, Sept. 20, 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
WHERE: 590 Madison Ave, in the atrium, entrance near 56th st.

Saturday, September 11th, four carloads of New Yorkers went down to Chester, PA, 15 miles SW of Philly. We met local Chester activists, students from Swartmore college, Swing the State volunteers, and ACORN and Campaign for Peace & Democracy for a great day of voter registration.

The internet and computers are amazing yet so frustrating…I wrote this the day I got back and it disappeared and I have yet to re-write, but at long last…

Elena and I spent September 11, 2004 in Chester, PA registering voters. We got a lot of positive response from our various postings, including one on Cosmopolity, so much so, that we were worried we wouldn’t have enough car space for everyone. Luckily, Swing the State came to the rescue with some extra car space (as well as one of our very enthusiastic trip-goers who got a car together at the last minute).

Three of our four cars met up in mid-town and caravanned down to Chester. We met up with the Campaign for Peace and Democracy, Swarthmore students, Swing the State, ACORN and other volunteers at the East Side Ministry. There were upwards of 70 volunteers (way more than expected). We were given a brief training on voter registration and an orientation into the area where we were going. Then the Campaign, in a very organized fashion, called out small groups of people and sent them on their way to register voters.

Elena, Rory and I went to a Kmart/ Pathmark shopping center. We had a lot of success there, Rory, being the master. He registered 18 people in 2.5 hours! He had quite a way with the people. I got kicked out of the Pathmark area after talking to a man who showed me his RNC membership card. I definitely blame him. I had been there for two hours prior to speaking with him. I had talked to many of the employees and many shoppers. He came up to me and inquired into what I was doing. I told him I was registering voters. He asked who I was paid by. I told him I was a volunteer. He told me he was registered to vote. I told him great. He told me I needed a permit. I politely told him that I did not think that was the case, but I would look into it. He told me it was and I shouldn’t be there. I thanked him for his concern and walked away. I was then approached by a store security guard who told me customers were complaining and I’d have to leave. I thanked her, and switched places with Elena. We both were fine for another half hour and then she got kicked out. But by that time we were all done.

We met back up with our group who all had a very positive experience. Some of our people enjoyed it so much that they stayed for the afternoon to continue registering people.

Our group registered over 100 voters that day and Driving Votes along with the other groups registered over 500 people!

You can join a similar trip Saturday, September 25th or the first weekend in October. Email Elena@drivingvotes.org

Look how much fun we had!
