Elana/Elena:

Why am I taking a trip? Bush et al do not represent us or what we think is in the best interest of our country and the world. We think it's important to engage in the democratic process and we think it's important to help engage those who may have been disenfranchised, particularly by the current administration.

Stella Please Support Driving Votes! - August 06, 2004

Last night I attended a Concert for Victory , a fund raiser for the Democrats. I think it was initially a Concert for Kerry, but the party decided they needed to have broader fund raising capabilities. As usual, there was very little conversation actually endorsing Kerry, but there was a fair amount of Bush Bashing. It was a night of stand-up comedy at the Knitting Factory. The evenings MC, Nick Kroll, asked at the beginning how many people had taken trips to swing states to register voters. A few people responded, while I found myself yelling the loudest--trying to shout out for Driving Votes. Jessi Klein read a very hard-hitting open letter to Bush thanking him for improving her personal life. She was so funny---dry and political.

Before the show began I walked around handing out Driving Votes fliers and asking people why they were there. Most people told me they were there for the politics and for the comedy. That seemed true enough. I was certainly there for the same reason. How could I pass up an opportunity to see Stella comedians Michael Showalter and David Wain? They were amazing, and I can only hope they will come to our NY fund raiser August 19th at Lolita. Michael Showalter, I gave you a flier last night. Are you reading this? Can you come? I had a great idea, why don't you come on a trip with us to a swing state. We are going to Philly Sunday. You could make a new Stella short about it. We could all get some good publicity from it---let me know.

Oh, and I ran into Sharif from Swing State Summer Break. He informed me of an imminent softball game between Driving Votes and SSSS after Bush loses. I can't wait.

Why am I writing about this fund raiser? In short, because I am really excited that so many people my age are getting involved politically by donating money, speaking up and hopefully acting out. For those of you I gave fliers to last night, come to a DV meeting, check out our ride board and come with us to a swing state! We can make a difference in the outcome of this election.
